Colorado Springs City Council informally voted 5-4 to kill a proposal that would increase monthly bills for solar customers.
The proposal aimed to charge solar customers more for peak hour usage, from 5-9 p.m., as part of the new Energy Wise program.
Tristen Gearheart, CFO of Colorado Springs Utilities, noted that solar users generate most of their energy during the morning or early afternoon hours when demand for energy is lower and supply is higher — making energy during these hours cheaper.
Many solar customers expressed concerns that the change would renege on past incentives, having spent tens of thousands of dollars installing solar panels.
Hundreds of Colorado Springs residents attended a hearing on the proposal, providing testimony and comments.
