Discussions about implementing a special tax district in Cherry Creek have ended due to significant pushback from residents.
A former Denver City Council member described the outcome as "Democracy 101," while a current council member expressed surprise at the level of opposition and misinformation shared.
I've never personally seen that big a pushback on a district — and so early.
Local consultant Jamie Giellis, who was hired to facilitate the process, made this statement regarding the abandoned plan for a general improvement district, which would have increased property taxes to pay for improvements.
Special taxing districts have been increasing in Denver, but the proposal for Cherry Creek was met with strong resistance from the community.
