Famous Monkey-Face Orchids are Vanishing in the Wild

The Dracula orchids, also known as "monkey-face orchids", have become online celebrities due to their unique appearance, with millions of people sharing their photos.

However, behind their viral charm lies a harsh reality: most of these species are on the brink of extinction. A new global assessment has revealed that out of 133 species assessed, nearly seven in ten are threatened with extinction.

Many of these orchids exist only in tiny fragments of forest, with some found in just one or two known locations, while others are known only from plants growing in cultivation, with their wild populations possibly already extinct.

They look like tiny monkeys peering out from the mist.
