BC Conservatives Respond to New U.S. Lumber Tariffs

BC Conservative leader John Rustad and MLA Ward Stamer criticized Premier David Eby's government for not doing enough to address the issue of lumber tariffs.

The U.S. has imposed an additional 10% tariff on imports of softwood lumber and timber, bringing the total to 45%. Furthermore, a 25% increase on certain upholstered furniture will be imposed, resulting in a 30% tariff by January.

Levies or an 'outright ban' on U.S. thermal coal shipments are needed in response to the lumber tariffs.

Rustad and Stamer suggest targeting thermal coal shipments as a retaliatory measure. They also argue that the government should make more wood available.

Author's summary: BC Conservatives propose retaliatory measures against US lumber tariffs.
