A team of researchers screened over 250,000 drugs and natural compounds to find those that stop viral replication the most.
Currently, there are only three antivirals authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating COVID-19. If the SARS-CoV-2 virus develops resistance to any of them, treatment options will be severely limited.
To find more treatment options, researchers conducted an extensive search, which led to the identification of four potential candidates for COVID treatment.
Already, the effectiveness of one of the drugs is in question, and another’s efficacy hasn’t yet been pinned down.
