The horror sequel Black Phone 2, directed by Scott Derrickson, takes place in 1982, four years after the events of the first film.
Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw reprise their roles to fight The Grabber in this Universal chiller, which shifts the setting from a dingy Denver basement to a snowy Christian holiday camp in rural Colorado.
The narrative stays tightly focused on the elements that worked so well in the first film; the unsettling menace of a child killer and a beyond-the-grave plotline augmented with gooey special effects.
Despite its creepy fun, the film proves to be an exercise in diminishing returns, retreading familiar ground. Black Phone 2 premiered at Fantastic Fest and will roll out globally from October 15.
Author's summary: Black Phone 2 is a horror sequel with diminishing returns.
