Supreme Court seems poised to further undercut the Voting Rights Act

Supreme Court Poised to Undercut Voting Rights Act

The Supreme Court's conservative majority may invalidate a section of the Voting Rights Act that ensures minority voters are not excluded from drawing new congressional district lines.

The Voting Rights Act, a landmark 1965 civil rights movement legislation, has been largely dismantled by the conservative Supreme Court since 2013.

The major exception was a decision two years ago that upheld the section of the law aimed at ensuring minority voters are not shut out of the process of drawing new congressional district lines.

However, Chief Justice John Roberts, who wrote that decision, downplayed its importance, suggesting it may not control the outcome in the current case.
