SoCal Freeway Shut Down Due to Live Ammunition Event
A 17-mile stretch of the I-5 freeway in Southern California was shut down on Saturday due to a military event involving live ammunition at Camp Pendleton, in celebration of the U.S. Marine Corps 250th anniversary.
- The freeway closure impacted both sides of the freeway from Harbor Drive in Oceanside to Basilone Road near San Onofre.
- The closure began at 11 a.m. and caused heavy traffic congestion just minutes after it took effect.
- A statement from the CHP confirmed that the military event involved "live ammunition being discharged by the federal government over the freeway."
Video provided by California officials shows live munitions being fired near the freeway Friday in an apparent practice run.
The freeway has since reopened on Saturday afternoon.
