A bird thought to be lost to science for over a century has been caught on camera in the remote outback.
The night parrot, considered the planet's most elusive bird, was snapped by a trail camera in the spinifex grasslands near the border between Western Queensland and the Northern Territory.
The critical find for conservationists came after researchers confirmed three photographs captured on Maiawali Country at Pullen Pullen Special Wildlife Reserve had captured one of the world's rarest and most cryptic birds.
The images were taken earlier this month by a remote camera at the reserve, managed by Bush Heritage Australia.
Author's summary: A near-mythical bird is spotted after a century.
