Shingrix Effectiveness in Preventing Shingles in Seniors
A real-world analysis reveals that Shingrix is highly effective in preventing shingles in adults over 65, including those with compromised immune systems.
Shingles is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which also causes chickenpox. It commonly affects adults over 50, according to the CDC, and presents as a rash with painful blisters.
Between 5% and 30% of patients with shingles experience post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), a long-lasting nerve pain. Shingrix, a recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) manufactured by GSK, provides better protection with two doses than with one.
