Acadia National Park leaf peepers undeterred by federal government shutdown

Acadia National Park Remains Popular Despite Government Shutdown

Despite the federal government shutdown, Acadia National Park remained a popular destination over the weekend, with large crowds gathering to enjoy the fall foliage.

Susan Harmon, who traveled from Connecticut with her daughter, noted that while some parts of the park were closed, their visit was not significantly impacted.

Because my daughter works for the federal government, she kind of knew that there would be parts of it closed, but overall it's been fine for us,
she said.

The parking lot at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center was full on Sunday morning, with Island Explorer bus service staff directing cars to the Acadia Gateway Center in Trenton. Visitors were still able to access the gift shop and restrooms, although the section of the visitor center normally staffed by park rangers was closed.

The park's popularity is a testament to the community's support for public spaces.
